Once again we benefit from the generosity of the BRADFORD MUSIC CLUB, who traditionally dedicate their last meeting of the year to our series in aid of Amnesty. With poems and songs about graffiti, shopping lists, Mad Men, notebooks, and death, Scriptophilia celebrates the sources, compulsions, and consolations of writing. Written and performed by PETER SPAFFORD with multi-instrumentalist RICHARD ORMROD. Peter's work has been performed on radio, television, and on the streets; in theatres, hospitals, prisons, and in the bath. Richard is Yorkshire Jazz 'Musician of the Year 2012'.

Outstanding pianist MARION RAPER brings together soprano JANE ANTHONY and violinist DAVID RILEY in a programme to include music by Franz Schubert, Samuel Barber and Aaron Copland. These musicians need no introduction. MARION is much in demand as a sensitive accompanist; JANE is admired throughout Leeds as an expressive singer and as founder of LEEDS LIEDER+, the festival of song which has done so much to make the art of song accessible to a larger public; DAVID, who teaches at the University of Leeds, has been a first violinist for OPERA NORTH for more than thirty years.

The Bridge Singers

Folk songs from around the British Isles, and of course some “jollies” to complete the evening’s entertainment – music to cover all tastes. THE BRIDGE SINGERS are a group of friends who live in and around Nottingham and enjoy singing together. They have performed in fringe concerts in the Nottingham Festival, and as far afield as Cumbria and Yorkshire and are delighted to be making a return visit to Rawdon, for this very worthy cause. They are directed by their leading soprano, LYNNE HOLLAND who gently bosses them through a repertoire which ranges from Madrigals to the Beatles.

BHAKTI (devotion): STORIES OF THE LOVE OF LIBERATION: VAYU NAIDU reimagines stories for Amnesty's anniversary with her new work from epics, and remembrances past. This performance is dedicated to Chris Banfield and David Griffiths who walked the way, and shared it. The VAYU NAIDU Storytelling Theatre is based in London, offering the live experience of Storytelling – sheer inspiration and pure craft, wit and wisdom. AND -MISCHIEF FROM THE MIDDLE AGES: The unreformed and unrepentant MARTIN RILEY takes us on an interactive tale-telling tour from Geoffrey Chaucer to Marie de France with due respect to his grandmother, Maggie Ann Riley who kept a swamp boggart called Jinny Greenteeth in her airing cupboard. Librettist, Playwright, Storyteller and ex Punch & Judy Professor’s Assistant, MARTIN RILEY is currently writing the libretto for a new touring “Pirate” opera for Glyndebourne by Lynne Plowman.

A Comedy of Errors When two sets of twins, separated in a storm, end up as adults in the same city on the same day, the mix-up of their identities unleashes yet another storm - of hilarity, in this, perhaps the most downright comical of all Shakespeare's plays. THEATRE OF THE DALES, directed this year by JESS NEALE, transports us to the fantastical world of Shakespeare’s imagination. Some seating, but feel free to bring a cushion, blanket, or deck chair.

Arioso: A Concert at the Assembly Rooms

The acclaimed early music group ARIOSO, directed by MARTYN HODGSON, offers a concert of vocal and instrumental music reflecting the programmes performed at the many Assembly Rooms and similar venues such as Pleasure Gardens and small theatres throughout Georgian England. Composers include Arne, Bishop, Dibdin, Piccini, Hook and other luminaries of the Georgian music and stage scene.

SUMMER’S LEASE

Rawdon Amnesty Series 2012

The story of Shakespeare in love: a sequence from Shakespeare’s sonnets, with songs by Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms. The poems read and the story told by PETER GILBERT and LEONIE THORNTON; the songs performed by EDWARD THORNTON, baritone, and JULIE WILSON, piano. THE HOPE THEATRE GROUP was founded in 2000 and to date has presented 21 productions including ten plays by Shakespeare. PETER GILBERT is a former teacher of English and Drama and LEONIE THORNTON is a music teacher and a former member of Opera North Chorus. EDWARD THORNTON is a founder member of Opera North, and he is accompanied on the piano by JULIE WILSON, a teacher and choir member at St Oswald’s Guiseley.

Stop Violence Against Women Presentations

Amnesty Internaitonal Leeds is hosting a pair of presentations concerning Stop Violence Against Women. There will be two presentations, one will focus on violence against women within the UK and the other wil focus on violence against women around the world. The presentations will be followed by an opportunity to informally discuss the issues rasied after the event.

Summer Letterfest

A festival of writing letters for Human Rights. This is an opportunity to write many campaigning letters all in one go. About 12 letters will be available, with background information on each, a standard letter, which if you prefer you can just sign, envelopes and even a colletion tin to make donations to cover postage. What's more there will be some light refreshments so you can relax for a few moments inbetween!

Each year members of all the AI UK groups and national members get together at our annual general meeting to discuss and makes decision about how AI UK Section will campaign for Human Rights. In addition this gives us the opportunity to hear various speakers and attend workshops. 
Typically AI Leeds Group sends a quartet of our members to strut their stuff so to avoid us forgetting it seemed a good idea to include this in our events.

Red Hand Day of Action to Prevent Child Soldiers


The Red Hand Day of Action to Prevent Child Soldiers is on Saturday April 16th on Albion Street. We need support throughout the day from 9.30 - 4:30 pm, two hour stints are ideal. We will aim to educate passers by and get them to sign red hands which will then be used to influence those governments which have not yet signed and ratified the Rights of The Child protocol on banning the use of children under the age of 18 yrs as combatants.

If you can help out then either turn up on a day and make yourself known or contact the group secretary Clive_Briscoe, who will pass on your email to the organisers.

Child Soldiers: Presentation by Gabriel, from Kabinda


Gabriel, from Kabinda will be relating his experience as a child soldier and how he eventually got leave to remain in this country. He has now been elected to the parliament in waiting of his country as the youngest member. He is a charismatic young man full of hope and enthusiasm to bring peace and prosperity to his people. He is travelling regularly from his home in Leeds to Switzerland where he has been helping write the country’s new constitution.

Still Human, Still Here Sleepout; Summer 2007 ( Leeds)

From 11pm on Saturday 16th June to 6am on Sunday 17th June at Mill Hill Unitarian Chapel. Many organisations at both a national and local level, including Amnesty International, Refugee Council, Church Action on Poverty and many others too numerous to mention, have joined together in a campaign called Still Human, Still Here dedicated to highlighting the plight of refused asylum seekers. As part of this campaign a sleepout has been organised in Leeds to raise local awareness of this issue.

Sponsored Walk for Destitute Refugees and Asylum Seekers

Members of Amnesty International Leeds Group, in association with Positive Action For Refugees and Asylum Seekers (PAFRAS) are planning a sponsored 6 mile walk for destitute asylum seekers. There are over 3,500 destitute asylum seekers in Leeds who are denied the right to work, receive no support, and have no legal access to shelter.

All money raised by this walk will be used to support destitute asylum seekers.

Down and Out in Leeds Winter 2006

Amnesty International Leeds group is campaigning on the issue of destitute asylum seekers being denied basic human rights. On Saturday December 9th members of the group will be sleeping rough, in Leeds city centre in solidarity with destitute asylum seekers, hoping to raise the profile of the situation and to show solidarity with their fellow human beings who are being denied such basic human rights.

Cycling from John O´Groats to Land´s End

Three members of the Amnesty International Leeds group, with nerves of steel and highly developed calf muscles, are cycling from John O´Groats to Land´s End to raise awareness of Amnesty International´s work and to raise funds. In order to get there, they will need lots of motivation which you can provide with a small donation.

The Rawdon Amnesty Series is a series of musical and drama events to raise funds for Amnesty International. Admission to the events is free and everyone is welcome. A voluntary collection will be taken at the event. All of which is passed on to Amnesty International.
